Nature’s Evening Calm
Carlos Avery Wildlife Refuge offers a peaceful retreat just a short drive from the Twin Cities, blending wetlands and prairies to form a rich ecosystem. This sanctuary serves as a reminder that nature can be found even in urban surroundings. During my latest visit, I aimed to capture the soothing sounds of an evening bird chorus as they settled in for the night. As daylight faded into dusk, their calls filled the air, each one signaling the transition to nighttime and enveloping the landscape in a calming embrace.
Sounds of Evening Birds
Despite its proximity to urban life, Carlos Avery feels surprisingly expansive, showcasing Minnesota’s vast wetlands. On this particular evening, I stood beside a tall oak tree at the prairie’s edge, gazing out over the wetlands in the distance. The setting sun bathed the grasses in a golden hue, creating a warm and serene atmosphere.
The first sounds to break the evening stillness were the clear, melodic notes of Song Sparrows, their rhythms weaving through the landscape. Soon after, the soft coos of Mourning Doves joined in, adding a gentle layer of calm that seemed to envelop everything. The playful mews of Catbirds added moments of delightful curiosity, while Goldfinches chirped cheerfully above, their notes fluttering like sparks in the twilight.
These calls blended seamlessly into a growing chorus of evening sounds. As the sun dipped lower, their melodies softened into a gentle lullaby that marked the day’s end—a peaceful reminder of the beauty found in even the smallest natural spaces, waiting to be appreciated.

Recording the Dusk Chorus
I set up my recording equipment on the west side of the refuge, just north of Little Coon Lake. A tall oak tree provided a natural anchor for my position. From here, I could see the prairie stretching out to the east while the woods stood quietly behind me. The wetlands lay off in the distance, creating a layered soundscape that promised an enriching experience.
Carlos Avery is close to busy highways and small airports, which often means noise pollution. However, at just the right moment during my visit, urban sounds began to fade away, allowing nature’s symphony to take center stage. The distant hum of traffic became part of the background noise, blending harmoniously with the natural rhythm around me—a subtle reminder of how this refuge acts as a sanctuary amid city life.
As dusk settled in, the bird chorus rose above any lingering urban sounds. Sparrows, doves, and cranes filled the air with a soothing blend of calls that transformed each moment into something timeless. Despite occasional distant traffic noises, peace reigned as evening bird calls became the true voice of this refuge—creating a sense of balance that felt deeply restorative.
